The plot:

It is 1876. The traditional Guy Fawkes’ Night celebration is bigger and better than ever this year, and excitement is building for the forthcoming lighting of the bonfire. Hawkers are selling Bonfire Toffee to the gentry, and children are begging for “a penny for the Guy”.

Well known Norwich Mayor Thomas Quested Finnis is descended from a long line of City Officials dating back to the 17th Century.

Unpopular, due to his harsh enforcement of taxation and cruel treatment of the poor, he is hoping to regain some of his popularity by hosting a party followed by a grand fireworks display at The Assembly House.

However - some people are angry about the money being spent on luxuries rather than helping the destitute; in particular, young urchin Timothy and his curmudgeonly Grandad William seem set on all kinds of mischief!

Finnis’s young ambitious protégé from Ireland, Oscar Murphy, is also there along with his new, elegant and innocent English fiancé Fanny Fox. All seems harmonious between them – but is there a chance of outed secrets turning the relationship into something really explosive?

Oh…and just one more thing – did Finnis mention that his extra-large and extravagant stock of fireworks is being stored in the undercroft at The Assembly House, below your feet…?

Do you dare risk the volatile night - where tempers may erupt, and impassioned grudges become violently inflamed? Victorian dress is encouraged but certainly not compulsory.
